Buying a steering wheel is an important decision. It affects how your car looks, how it feels to drive, and how comfortable you are behind the wheel. At Moto-Lita, we speak to customers every day who have similar questions before placing an order.
This article answers the most common questions we’re asked.
Which Moto-Lita steering wheel should I choose?
The right wheel depends on three main things:
- The style of your car
- How you drive it
-
The look and feel you want inside the cabin
Most customers start by choosing between:
- Mk3 wheels for a classic, traditional appearance
-
Mk4 wheels for a more contemporary look
From there, you can decide on wood or leather, flat or dished, and the diameter that best suits your car.
What’s the difference between Mk3 and Mk4 wheels?
- Mk3 steering wheels are often paired with wooden rims for period-correct interiors.
-
Mk4 steering wheels are commonly chosen for a more modern feel.
Both are handmade in our Hampshire workshop and offer the same level of craftsmanship. The choice is largely about style and comfort.
Should I choose Wood or Leather?
This is one of the most common questions we’re asked.
Wood rims offer:
- A warm, tactile feel
- Traditional aesthetics
-
A timeless look
Leather rims provide:
- Extra grip and comfort
- A softer feel for longer drives
-
A more understated appearance
Do I need a Flat or Dished steering wheel?
The dish of a wheel affects your driving position.
- Flat wheels suit tighter cabins and keep the wheel closer to the dashboard.
-
Dished wheels bring the wheel closer to the driver, improving reach and comfort.
What diameter should I choose?
Wheel diameter influences both appearance and steering effort.
- Larger wheels feel lighter and more traditional.
-
Smaller wheels feel sportier and offer more legroom.
The correct size depends on your steering system and seating position. If you are happy with the size of wheel you currently have, it is usually best to choose the same size again (measured from outside edge to outside edge.) However, if you do want a different size, check that the stalks are easily accessible from the wheel and the instruments are still visible.
Do I Need a Boss Kit?
Yes. A boss kit is essential.
The boss kit connects the steering wheel to your car’s steering column and must match your vehicle precisely. Using the correct boss ensures:
- Safe installation
- Proper alignment
-
Working horn and indicator cancellation
Again, if you’re unsure which boss kit you need, email us on info@moto-lita.co.uk and we’ll identify it for you.
Can I reuse an existing Boss Kit?
Sometimes, but not always.
It depends on:
- The condition of the boss
- The vehicle
-
The steering column type
We always recommend checking before reusing an old boss.
Are Moto-Lita Wheels easy to fit?
Yes. With the correct boss kit, fitting is usually straightforward.
Most customers or specialists can install a Moto-Lita wheel with basic tools. However, if you’re uncertain, please discuss with a qualified mechanic.
Will a Moto-Lita Wheel suit my interior?
A Moto-Lita wheel should never look out of place. With different finishes, spoke styles, rim materials and diameters available, most interiors can be matched beautifully.
How Long Will My Order Take?
Lead times can vary depending on the wheel and finish chosen, as every wheel is handmade. For the most up-to-date information, email us on info@moto-lita.co.uk and we’ll be happy to advise.
Choosing a steering wheel should be enjoyable, not intimidating. With the right guidance, most customers find the process straightforward and rewarding.
