Spring jobs Top 10 - waking up your classic car!

The snowdrops are out and that can only mean one thing - it’s time to wake up your  classic!

You’ve probably already thought about meeting up with club mates and started to plan shows, great journeys and events but before any of that can happen, put the kettle on because there’s work to be done!

Here’s our Top 10 things to think about when getting your pride and joy out of winter mothballs:

  1. Visual checks - How has it fared over the winter months? Check for leaks, damage, corrosion, rodent infestations etc.

  2. Check oil levels - check for leaks and repair as necessary, replace oil filter, top up / replace oil

  3. Coolant system - check levels, check antifreeze requirements, replace worn hoses, replace thermostat, water pump, gaskets etc.

  4. Electrical system - check fuses, lights, distributor cap, rotor, condenser, leads, spark coil and plugs. Does the battery still hold charge?

  5. Lubrication - suspension, steering box, doors, bonnet and boot hinges

  6. Engine checks - valve clearances, balance carburettors, replace or refill air filters

  7. Tyres - Checking tyres for roadworthiness - age, cracking, delamination, pressure

  8. Brakes - Checking the braking system, check discs for pitting, warping and ridges, inspect pad wear, check brake drums for shoe and lining wear, ensure auto-adjustment is functioning correctly, check for corrosion and fluid contamination

  9. Sundries - this is a good time to check wiper blades, radiator cap, fanbelt, fuel filter etc. and a great opportunity to treat yourself to a new steering wheel, boss and gearknob

  10. Cleaning - body polish / leather care / hood care / brightwork / carpets / glass / steering wheel / dashboard and door caps

Whether your vehicle is a shiny sports car or a workaday classic, it deserves to be enjoyed and will repay you with dividends for the care and attention you lavish upon it. Happy motoring!
